ArmorKinetix – Decentralized Servo Drive Solution
ArmorKinetix is a new addition to the servo drive portfolio. It is a servo drive built on the Kinetix 5700 platform, offering state-of-the-art control methods and designed for the most demanding applications and systems. Two versions are available – DSD and DSM. The DSD (Distributed Servo Drive) version has the drive placed separately from the servo motor. The DSM (Distributed Servo and Motor) version combines the motor and drive into one compact unit. The operating principle is similar to that of the Kinetix 5700. A power module is installed in the control cabinet, from which cables lead to the first ArmorKinetix – these hybrid cables carry both power and Ethernet/IP communication. Hybrid cables are also used to connect all ArmorKinetix drives on the machine. An Ethernet cable from the last axis to the controller module can also ensure a ring communication topology – DLR (Device Level Ring). The maximum number of axes per power module is 24. Multiple power modules can be connected in a multiple configuration (connecting multiple power modules) to increase the number of axes. The servo drives also include LED indicators for quick device status diagnostics.
DSD (Distributed Servo Drive)
In this version, the motor is placed separately from the drive, allowing the drive to be positioned anywhere on the machine or near the motor. This flexibility gives the DSD version a wide range of applications. It supports VP, MP, or linear motors. Other features of the DSD version include IP66 or IP67 protection, 1Gbit EtherNet/IP communication with DLR support, and 230 V or 400 V power supply. Naturally, extended safety functions are included – up to SIL3/PLe safety with Ethernet-based safety and functions like STO (Safe Torque Off), SS1 (Safe Stop 1), SLS (Safe Limited Speed), SDI (Direction), and more.
DSM (Distributed Servo and Motor)
In the DSM version, the motor and drive are offered as a compact unit. It uses the proven VPL motor series. Both the power supply and protection class are the same as in the previous version. The safety level is determined by the selected motor feedback and can also reach up to SIL3/PLe. Both versions can include an integrated brake. When comparing the dimensions of a standard VPL motor to the integrated DSM version, the ArmorKinetix is only about 100 mm longer.
Power Module
Up to 24 axes can be connected to the ArmorKinetix power module. A multiple configuration is also available, meaning that more power modules can be connected for applications requiring more than 24 axes. The power supply can be either 230 V or 400 V, with a capacity of up to 15 kW.
ArmorKinetix naturally supports the CIP Motion protocol – real-time positioning. Since this new servo system is based on the Kinetix 5700, the power module also features the Kinetix 5700 display with a keypad, making module control very similar. Programming is the same as with the Kinetix 5700, i.e., via Studio 5000.
