Rockwell Automation is introducing a new version of the processor for ControlLogix control systems.

This processor, designated 5590, pushes the boundaries of speed and performance to a completely new level. Its main motto is to be 2x faster in everything compared to the previous generation. In addition to double the speed, this new processor also includes a second built-in gigabit Ethernet port.

All processor variants can function as a safety control system in the SIL2 category. Safety has therefore become a standard feature. When a Safety Partner is used, the processor meets SIL 3 safety requirements. The division of memory into standard and safety is determined by the programmer. The maximum size of safety memory is 12 MB.

Thanks to the new processor, the control system can operate in compliance with the IEC 62443-4-2 standard for cybersecurity in industrial systems. Support for CIP Security and secure boot is naturally included.

For easier initial commissioning and configuration, the processor features a USB-C port.

The processor is also offered in a more robust version (XT version) for higher temperature ranges and with an anti-corrosion surface treatment.

An interesting option is a version with 2 MB of memory, which in price comes close to CompactLogix, but unlike them, it is possible to add additional Ethernet/IP communication modules to this control system.

Studio 5000 version 38 or higher is required for programming all processors of the 5590 series.
